Ridin’ Solo

It’s not always easy to find friends or family who want to travel to the same places that you do and the idea of travelling alone may put you off from visiting destinations you’ve always dreamed of going to. In my experience, group excursions and tours are an ideal way for solo travellers to go on holiday with the comfort and security of knowing they’ll be travelling with other people and have a knowledgeable guide on hand as well. You’re also more likely to visit places off the beaten track and enjoy unique experiences that might have seemed too out of reach or hard to do alone. And you can make new friends in the process!

Of course, if you have ever tried to travel as a solo, you are familiar with the nasty little thing called a “Single Supplement”. This is a surcharge applied to solo travellers as a way for tour operators/cruise lines/certain accommodation providers to recover some money they are losing from not having double occupancy. But really it feels like a punishment! However, don’t be disheartened. There are actually quite a number of tour operators/cruise lines that have less harsh, or even waived, single supplements for the solo traveller. Sometimes this comes in the form of a “single room” where you have a single room to yourself, or a “shared room” where you room a member of the same sex in order to apply a double occupancy rate.

Just to show you an example of a solo group trip with the single supplement waived:

Jordan – Desert/Amman/Petra

  • Wadi Mujib – trek the Siq Trail of Wadi Mujib Biosphere Reserve
  • Wadi Rum – Vast red desert landscape with rolling dunes and dramatic rock formations
  • Shobak or Karak Crusader castles – Reminders of the former glory of the Crusaders
  • Madaba – Christian market town, Church of St George, Jordan’s finest Byzantine mosaics
  • Amman – Ancient hilltop citadel, fascinating Archaeological Museum and bustling souqs
  • Two nights in Petra – UNESCO-listed Nabataean city that was all but lost to the modern world until its rediscovery in 1812
  • Dead Sea – Dramatically beautiful landscape with warm buoyant mineral-rich waters
  • Mt Nebo – Perhaps one of the most sacred sites in Jordan with views across the Promised Land
  • Umm ar-Rasas – An ancient city and important stop on the caravan route between east and west
