Uniquely Northern Ireland

If Northern Ireland is not yet on your list….it should be! This gem of a region hosts a number of amazing activities, all while being less touristy than its’ Southern cousin, Ireland. There really is a lot to do and see here.

Many routes of Northern Ireland take you along the coastal roads which boast stunning views of the Irish Sea and North Atlantic. You can see Scotland from a number of vantage points, and take in the wild, untamed beauty of the sea and rugged coastline. Its absolutely stunning and there truly is nothing quite like it. Not to mention the adorable seaside Irish towns, with cute little shops and pubs around every corner. Touring this area is truly a delight.

Some particular gems stood out to me, and I highly recommend you discover them as well. They are the Experience Winterfell – Game of Thrones experience, the Gobbins Cliff Path and Giant’s Causeway.

If you are a Game of Thrones fan, Experience Winterfell is an absolute MUST! Much of the earlier seasons of Game of Thrones was filmed in this Winterfell location, and you get to actually experience it, costumes and all! This immersive tour set within the grounds of Winterfell Castle & Demesne masterfully recreates the experience of stepping into the world of George. R.R. Martin. Dress like a member of the Stark family, tour the movie set, take ample photos and test your archery skills, all within the boundaries of the real- life movie set. Plus…you get to try their delicious Winter Ale brew at the end of the experience!

More interested in natural marvels? The Gobbins Cliff Path is a 3 mile walk along the rugged seaside. As in, on the side of a cliff beside the sea! During this amazing walking tour, you will taste the sea salt, feel the wind from the Irish Sea, hear tales of local smugglers, observe the native sea birds and keep your eyes open for dolphins swimming off the coastline. The guided walk will escort you along the path, hugging the dramatic cliff face and across spectacular bridges looking down on the crashing waves of the North Channel. You really feel like you’re out there….experiencing something amazing. **Note, you do need to be in relatively good condition to do this walk, as it can be strenuous. Hiking boots are also required, and you can rent them there if need be.

And…to save the most famous for last, you must visit the Giant’s Causeway. Often referred to as the 8th Wonder of the World, this UNESCO World Heritage site is both stunning and puzzling. The hexagonal stones have created legends of being placed there by giants, and the Irish tour guides delight in telling the tale of the Irish giant creating it as a bridge to meet a Scottish giant, and the hijinks that ensued. Folklore aside though, its a great place to walk around, take some Instagram worthy photos and marvel at nature. Bring your walking shoes, a snack and spend a few hours taking it all in.

Finally, I recommend you spend at least one night in the lovely town of Derry (Londonderry). It is the only completely walled city in Ireland, has retained most of its historical buildings and sites, including the walls of the city. There are beautiful churches and quaint shopping areas to visit. It is also considered to be the starting point for the “Troubles” in Ireland from the 1970s – 1990s and was named the UK City of Culture in 2010.

Northern Ireland is a gem. I recommend it because it is full of surprises, interesting places to discover and is less busy and touristy than the rest of Ireland. I highly suggest a fully escorted tour package to this area, as you do have to drive long distances to get to attractions, and there are many hidden gems along the way, that you may miss.
