San Sebastian, Spain – Pintxo Anyone!?

If you’re anything like me, you enjoy being pleasantly surprised by new types of cuisine while travelling. San Sebastian, Spain offers just that experience. With the highest concentration of Michelin stars in the world, this city does not disappoint when it comes to its culinary scene. One of the most interesting aspects of its culinary scene is the pintxo culture.  I’m sure you are familiar with tapas, but have you heard of pintxos? Pronounced “pinchos”, these are the small Basque style tapas that this city is famous for. Their pintxo culture is almost unmatched, with more pintxo bars per square meter than anywhere else in Spain, and most likely the world.  They are meant to be a small snack, and it is common to go into a pintxo bar, and choose from the many varieties waiting for you on the counter. A popular activity is the “pintxo crawl”. Instead of a bar crawl, you just go to a variety of different pintxo bars and sample food all day. Make sure to come hungry!

San Sebastian is not only about the food. It is also a home base for exploring the Basque country, and has a mini Rio de Janeiro like aura. One of the most stunning aspects of this gorgeous city is the Playa de la Concha. This amazing sandy beach opens to a turquoise water bay, and lends itself to being the ultimate place to relax and soak up some rays while enjoying the beautiful scenery.

While there, also check out the historic old town, its amazing architecture and the Gothic and Baroque style churches, as well as the historic museums. This is the happening area, which also houses the most pinxto bars.
