Dublin surprised me. As a booming tech hub in Europe, I thought this city might feel a little more industrial….and a little less “Irish”. I was wrong. This is a multi cultural city which has maintained its Irish charm and roots; its modern yet traditional, industrial yet welcoming. You get the feeling that no matter who you are or where you’re from, this city has something for you.

For myself, it is the cocktail scene. Dublin has a large entertainment area referred to as Temple Bar, where locals and tourists alike go for great bars and great entertainment. This is where the night scene Dublin is most vibrant, and you can feel like a local. Of course, getting a pint of Guiness is a must and there are numerous Irish pubs to quench your thirst. But if you’re looking for something less mainstream, there is a number of amazing speakeasy type establishments where you can gather inspiration (and if you’re not careful, a hangover the next morning!). Here are a few of my favourites:

- Vintage Cocktail Club – This true cocktail speakeasy with no signage can only be found if you know where it is…a simple address is all you get. Here you get cocktails inspired by recipes from the 1400s to today, making this place extremely unique. My personal favourite is the Weathered Storm. Dare to try something new! Here is a link to their site, and I highly recommend reservations.
- Peruke & Periwig – This is a nice mix of Irish pub meets cocktail speakeasy where you can still get a pint, have a great dinner and enjoy an artisan cocktail. Inventive cocktail menu surprises and inspires. You must try the “Key Lime Pie”, their take on the Gimlet with toasted meringue foam on top! Check them out here.

Dublin is not only bars; it is a city that values sharing its heritage. One of the highlights in the city is EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum. The Irish have emigrated all over the world, having a profound effect on the communities they settle in, and creating family heritage for many worldwide. This amazing and interactive museum celebrates the Irish and highlights their contribution to the world, as well as their heritage. This is a great place for families and intrigued travellers alike as it really offers something for everyone. Amazing digital displays and interactive screens help you learn and you leave feeling like you understand more about the Irish, and even perhaps about yourself. Definitely leave at least 3 hours to explore this place!

For such a dense city, Dublin also has a large number of parks. Ireland is known for its amazing greenery, and Dublin is no different. One of the premier parks in the city is St. Stephen’s Green. It is a historical park and garden located in the middle of the city, and a great place to enjoy a lovely walk or a picnic. If you get tired of the hustle and bustle, immerse yourself in this beautiful gem.

Finally, what would Dublin be without whiskey?? Famous for this spirit, the city is filled with distilleries and whiskey tastings. I preferred to get off the beaten path and check out The Dublin Liberties Distillery. One of Dublin’s newest distilleries, you can truly feel the passion they put into their craft. They distill a variety of whiskey for almost every taste. I highly recommend a tour of the distillery, as you get up close and personal with the process, and their staff are very entertaining. They also start you out with a shot of honey whiskey (delicious!!) and end with a tasting of a number of different varieties. If you ask really nicely, they might even let you bartend for a photo op!

Dublin is a gem and wonderful to visit. I recommend 4 nights in this amazing city to really get a good feel for it. However if you are short on time and energetic, you can see a lot in just 2 days.

**Just a note about getting to Dublin city from the airport: There is no light rail system into the city, and if you want to take public transit, then you will be taking a bus. It takes about 30-45 minutes to reach the city from the airport, and if you include time waiting for a bus, then give yourself about an hour. Or….save yourself the hassle of the crowded bus and arrange for a private transfer beforehand**
